Upgraded my iPhone 3G (Navigon review)

philips_tapster_bluetooth_headset_shb7110.jpg navigatie-navigon.jpg Now with the new iPhone 3.0 firmware it was time to “upgrade” the iPhone to the system I was really really looking forward to for a long time. First I wanted a navigation system of course. With my old windows mobile phones I had TomTom as a navigation software at hand. That was very convenient. I lost that when I got the iPhone. Not that I did regret trading in the windows mobile for the iPhone. The iPhone really is my BEST PHONE EVER. But now there is Navigon for the iPhone. I was thinking of waiting for the TomTom software to compare but then couldn’t resist. Probably the difference won’t be that big. Other than TomTom might be more expensive and won’t offer entire Europe (Albania, Andorra, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Gibraltar, Greece, United Kingdom, Ireland , Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Sweden, Switzerland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary, Vatican) for this price. So I decided to download Navigon for my basic (read every now and then) navigation needs. Well, really looks good and works well. I already owned a carkit to put the iPhone in. It needs to be charged when you use it for navigation. The battery will be drained and you want to still use the iPhone when you reach your destination, don’t you? I hooked the iPhone up to the car stereo (Sony Xplod) already by bluetooth. That let’s me play my music on the car stereo and get the navigation through the speakers through the music. Works well. Loud and clear. Even tried it walking with “upgrade number 2″, the Philips SHB7110 Tapster bluetooth stereo headset. Also works. Although the gps fix was a bit difficult in the area I was walking. In the car everything worked splendid though. No drops, no bad turns. Picked up a d-tour quickly. Roads were up to date. Pressing the home button twice (!) gives you the iPod controls. 1 tap closes the navigation though. So don’t make that mistake. It will have to start up all over again. Not that big of a problem, more an annoyance. Too bad the iPhone doesn’t support AVCRP to control the tunes through the bluetooth headset or car stereo. Downer Apple! You should fix that in firmware 3.1! Because of that it is so weird that you have to control the volume through the headset or car stereo (because it is disabled on the iPhone) but still have to get the iPhone to control skip. But apart from those minor downsides I have never been happier with a mobile phone like I am now. It’s my übergadgetsystem…
