Forest Retreat and Art Discovery in Gothenburg, Sweden (August 18–21)
A Cabin Deep in the Swedish Woods
After the gentle start of the trip in Børkop, Denmark, we crossed into Sweden and found ourselves in a completely different kind of stillness. Tucked away in the forest outside Gothenburg, our wooden cabin offered space, silence, and a deep breath of northern air.
The large wooden deck overlooked nothing but trees. Morning coffee came with golden light streaming through the pines. Evenings were marked by soft pink skies and the rustling of leaves — no traffic, no buzz, just forest.
This place invited us to slow down even further. There was time to read, to talk, to listen, and to just be. It reminded me how different rest can feel when it’s framed by nature instead of routine.
Forest Walks and Quiet Lakes
One afternoon, we walked through ferns and birch trees to a quiet lake tucked between the hills. Sitting by the water, we watched the ripples shift across the surface and birds sweep between trees.
There was no agenda. Just the presence of the moment — and it was more than enough.
A Day in Gothenburg: From Red Brick to Modern Art
On August 20, we left the forest behind for a day and explored central Gothenburg. This city is a fascinating blend of tradition and progress. Wide green parks surround historic buildings, and just a few steps away, you’ll find some of the most impressive contemporary art in the region.
Göteborgs Konstmuseum: Layers of Time and Texture
At the heart of our visit was the Gothenburg Museum of Art (Göteborgs Konstmuseum). The building itself is monumental, and the exhibitions inside are even more so.
We visited Monira Al Qadiri’s “Burning Desire”, a contemporary installation that pulses with questions of identity, transformation, and memory. Her sculpture — a surreal, golden swirl with a black bird taking flight — stood boldly in front of a classic Renaissance painting. The juxtaposition was striking.
Elsewhere, a serene marble sculpture of a young woman knelt between two hyper-realistic portraits — the quiet tension between past and present was present throughout the museum.
Reflecting on Gothenburg
This stop offered the best of both worlds: nature and solitude in the forest, followed by cultural immersion in one of Sweden’s most vibrant cities.
It was a reminder that travel doesn’t always have to be fast-paced or packed with activities. Sometimes, the balance of slow mornings and art-filled afternoons offers the richest experience.
From here, we continued north toward Norway — but Gothenburg, with its blend of forest stillness and urban depth, left a lasting impression.
