A Scenic Drive through Southern Norway with Art and Cuisine at the Finish
From Misty Mountains to Coastal Light
After a peaceful overnight stay at Hovdestøylen Hotel in Hovden, we set off early toward the southern coast. The route from Hovden to Kristiansand is one of the most visually arresting stretches of our entire Norwegian road trip.
Driving through the highlands, we encountered low-hanging clouds, scattered lakes, and mossy terrain shifting from green to gold. At one point, a faint rainbow arched over a mountain valley—one of those fleeting, almost unreal scenes that seems uniquely Norwegian.
We stopped often to photograph the changing weather and rugged terrain. The quiet of the mountains was occasionally interrupted by rushing rivers and the crunch of gravel underfoot. Despite the moody skies, the landscape had its own calm intensity. If you’re planning a road trip through Southern Norway, this section deserves to be taken slowly.
Arrival in Grim and the Artistic Heart of Kristiansand
By late afternoon we arrived in Grim, a green and peaceful neighborhood just outside Kristiansand. The contrast with the mountainous inland couldn’t have been greater. Here, nature and modern life meet at the edge of the sea.
One of our main reasons for visiting Kristiansand was the Kunstsilo Museum, a former grain silo transformed into one of Norway’s most striking art venues. Its raw concrete architecture, hollow cylindrical towers, and star-shaped ceiling lights create a space that feels simultaneously industrial and spiritual.
Inside, the art was bold and contemporary, but the building itself nearly stole the show. If you’re into modern architecture or Scandinavian design, this is a must-visit.
Tasting Southern Norway
To end the day, we treated ourselves to a refined late dinner in Hovden. First came a creamy fish soup, topped with crispy seaweed, salmon roe, and mussels—a rich, ocean-inspired starter.
The main dish was reindeer stew, served with smooth mashed potatoes, fresh herbs, and tart lingonberries on the side. A classic Norwegian dish, elevated to something elegant but still deeply local.
All of it was served in a cozy restaurant with a view of the forest—just another reminder that in Southern Norway, you’re never far from nature.
Final Thoughts
The road from Hovden to Grim (Kristiansand) offered a perfect balance: raw mountain beauty in the morning, cultural depth in the afternoon, and culinary delight in the evening.
If you’re building a Norwegian road trip itinerary, this leg bridges the solitude of the highlands with the sophistication of the southern coast. It’s a transition worth savoring—slow roads, short hikes, long dinners, and art that stays with you.
