I recently walked In adellijke voetsporen, an 11-kilometre route through Olterterp and Beetsterzwaag. The name means “in noble footsteps”, and it suits a walk that moves between old estates, country houses and traces of the families who once shaped this part of Friesland.
What stayed with me most, though, was the variety. One moment I was following a shaded woodland path; the next I was looking across open grass, still water or a carefully arranged estate garden. The bright weather made the contrast even stronger, with deep shadows beneath the trees and sunlight catching every clearing.

Where landscape and history meet
The walk passes through woodland and village streets as well as the grounds around several historic properties. The aristocratic story is not confined to grand façades. It appears in smaller details too: an ornament beside a brick wall, a classical figure overlooking a pond and an ornate gate half-hidden among the trees.

Across the Wite Mar
A memorable part of the route is the stretch around the Wite Mar. The path narrows into a wooden boardwalk through the reeds, bringing the walk close to the water before it returns to the shelter of the trees. It is the kind of transition that makes the route feel longer—in a good way—because the scenery keeps changing around you.

A walk worth slowing down for
This is not simply a route between historic buildings. It is a walk in which the landscape ties everything together: forest paths, ponds, gardens, village streets and quiet reminders of another era. Even the surprises—the faces emerging from a tree trunk, for example—feel at home here.
Eleven kilometres is long enough to settle into the rhythm of the surroundings, but compact enough for an unhurried day out. Good shoes are useful on the unpaved forest sections, and it is worth taking your time. On this route, the details are as rewarding as the destination.
